The 2017 Riccarton Park Golf Complex Canterbury 4BBB Championship is being played at Templeton Golf Club this Sunday, and has again attracted a full and quality field to compete for the Canterbury titles.
In the men's field the top rated pair are Nic Kay and Nick Franzmann from Coringa. Also in the mix are the Harewood pairing of Matt McLean & Robert Gregory, and Jake Roberts (Russley) & Jake Hallinan (Weedons) The reappearance of Connell Kilpatrick who is back from living in the US will be of interest. He is partnered with Reid Hilton.
In recent years it has been difficult to get into the men's field with entries balloted based on combined handicap. This year an average handicap index of 6.5 was needed to get into the field reflecting a true Canterbury Championship for this format. Gone are the days where you could combime and a low handicapper and a high handicapper and still get in the field.
A small dent has been put in the women's field with the late withdrawal of defending champions Amelia Garvey and Jasmine Rou. Last year's runners-up Catherine Bell and Hillary O'Connor will now be favourities to win the title. Their nearerst challengers are Catherine Knight and Anne Dick, but they are seven shots behind on combined handicap.
First tee off is at 10am, and with weather prospects improving it should be another good day to kick off what is now traditionally the first tournament of the new season.
