The 2017 Golf Warehouse Canterbury Matchplay is being held at Harewood Golf Club over Labour Weekend starting with qualifying on Saturday, then matchplay on Sunday and Monday.
Defending Champion Hiroki Miya (Russley) will be back to defend his title. Competition will be hotly contested with a number of other players in good form including Tom Parker, Dominic Brettkelly, Ben Baker and Kazuma Kobori who were all part of the recent winning Canterbury Boys Interprovincial team. The likes of Matt McLean, Reid Hilton, Sam Purdon, and past champion Oscar Cadenhead will also be looking to gain a top qualifying spot to plot an easier path through to the finals on Monday. The open mens section will qualify into two divisions of 16 players.
The Women's section is somewhat depleted this year with only nine players. NZ rep Amelia Garvey is resting prior to the NZ Amateur at Russley - she has played a lot of golf in recent times including the McKayson NZ Women's Open. This will leave it to Canterbury team-mates Catherine Bell, Hillary O'Connor, Olive Tapu, and defending champion Juliana Hung to fight it out for the title unless one of the others can cause an upset.
The Men's Masters Championship sees a strong field of sixteen players with qualifying to decide the seeding for the matchplay draw of 16 players. The field will be headed by defending champion Blair Dibley on his home course. With the Canterbury Freyberg Masters team named this week, he will be hotly challenged by team-mates Aaron Forsyth, Richard Belcher, and Jonathan Stieller.
The Women's Masters field has eight entries, with past champions Cheryl Kemp and Ginny Bolderston leading the field.
Play starts with qualifying on Saturday at 7.45am, and matchplay starting from 8.00am on Sunday. Semi-finals and finals are on Monday.
Results will also be posted on the Canterbury Golf website and updates on our Facebook page throughout the weekend.
