After a false start last week due to weather, the 2017 Woodward Cup got underway yesterday at Harewood Golf Club in fine winter conditions.
The host club got off to a good start with a 6-2 win over newcomers Pegasus. For Harewood Matt Mclean. Rob Gregory, Scott Manyweathers, Josh Smith, and Antony Dale had wins, the feature match being Matt McLean's win against Pegasus No.1 Andrew Green 2/1. Kazuma Kobori and Richard Sinclair had wins for Pegasus.
Bottle Lake caused a minor uspet when they beat Clearwater 4.5-3.5. For Bottle Lake Jordan Pruden, Jason Campbell, Phil Davis and Kieran Sharvin had wins, with Aaron Neill getting a half against Matt Adam. Jake Hallinan, Austin Hamilton, and Ryan Adams got the wins for Clearwater. Notably Oscar Cadenhead was absent from the Clearwater line-up.
Templeton and Coringa fought out a 4-4 draw. Templeton was strong at the top of the order with wins to Sam Purdon, Tom Wilson and Phil Bungard, and James Robb at No. 6. However Coringa dominated the bottom half with wins to Peter Fox, John Rademakers, Grant Mercer, and Jackson Joseph.
Perennial favourites Russley and Christchurch both made a good start to their campaigns. Christchurch beat Waitkiri 6-2. Tom Parker had a big win 7/6, however four of the matches went to the last hole and Christchurch won all of them. Russley beat Avondale 7-1. Hayden Burns had the only win for Avondale.
The next round is at Templeton this coming Sunday.
