The 2017 Lamb & Hayward Canterbury Strokeplay is being held this weekend at Templeton Golf Club with a record 120 entries being ballotted down to make up a capacity field of 96 players.
The field is strengthened this year with the additional of players from Otago, Southland and Tasman. Previously clashing, the Otago Strokeplay is now the following weekend at Balmacewen. To incentivise both tournaments the Canterbury and Otago Associations have got together with the House of Travel to provide prizes for best scores across both tournaments. Four Canterbury juniors made a trip to Melbourne to compete at the Victorian Junior Masters played at the Churchill Park and Waverley Golf Clubs. The event is a world ranking event and one of the top events to play in Australia. With an extensive honour roll of USPGA Tour winners and players it is obvious as to why The Victorian Junior Masters is Australia's leading junior golf tournament. Past champions include Aaron Baddeley in 1998, prior to winning 2 Australian Open titles, and Jason Day in 2005 who at the time was the World Junior Amateur Champion. Other past competitors...

John Lister is returning to the Russley Golf Club as part of the club’s NZPGA Garden City Legends’ tournament to be held on Tuesday 14th. February. John won the Garden City Classic professional tournament at Russley four times in a row from 1972 to 1975. In the history of tournament golf around the world such a feat has only been matched by one other golfer – Tiger Woods who won the Bay Hill Invitation tournament from 2000 to 2003.

A strong field of 51 juniors competed in the Canterbury Age Group Championships played at the Russley Golf Club. The Championship event was played over 36 holes with players as young as seven years of age competing. Players took advantage of the great course conditions in the morning before the wind started to make an impact during the afternoon. Hiroki Miya (Russley) put one hand on the trophy after the morning round after shooting a 3 under par 69 to have a four shot lead over Kazuma Kobori (Rangiora) heading into the afternoon round. Canterrbury Golf Development Trust Chair Maryanne Marlow pictured with the Champions
The third Faldo Series Asia New Zealand Championship has been completed and a new New Zealand Champion has been found in the form of 16 year old Hiroki Miya.
After an unseasonal weather bomb caused the cancellation of the first round of the tournament Hiroki posted a skillfully crafted 69, featuring 4 birdies and a single bogey, in the afternoon round to set the pace. Only one other player managed a par or better round which was testimony to the extreme wind conditions, often gusting over 40kph.

Pegasus continued their stellar year winning the Woodward Cup Promotion / Relegation match against Lincoln and Weedons at Waimairi Beach yesterday in fine, windy weather and the course in excellent condition after overnight rain. An excellent team result with all players contributing well for Pegasus gave them a total gross stableford score of 230 and a three point advantage over last year’s bottom placed Woodward Cup team Weedons on 227 and Lincoln 198.
Pegasus now qualify for the 2017 Woodward Cup and will take up their position in Canterbury’s premier match play interclub competition next year.

The Flexi Lease Canterbury Women's Team performed well during the week to earn their spot in the semi finals where they played against Bay of Plenty, a repeat of last years final. The Canterbury Team had a narrow advantage through the turn but there wasn't much seperating the two teams. Catherine Bell secured the first point for the team with a 3/1 win over Jodae Ngaheu. Amelia Garvey played well to beat Alanna Campbell 3/2 achieving the perfect unbeaten record from the seven matches played. The Fenix Canterbury Men's Team produced an improved performance to finish in sixth position at the NZ Toro Interprovincials played at the New Plymouth Golf Club. The team started well with comprehensive wins over Takanaki, Southland and Tasman. The match against Otago resulted in a half to put the team in a great position to challenge for a semi final position. The two matches on the final day were against Northland and Wellington. Northland came out firing and produced a top notch performance rolling the Canterbury team. Canterbury went in the final match knowing to control their own destiny they would need to beat Wellington. This annual fixture gathering Presidents and Secretaries from golf clubs across Canterbury was held yesterday at Russley Golf Club in cool but fine conditions. Joining club representatives were Canterbury Golf Life Members and volunteer management associated with Canterbury Golf.
19 Presidents competed for the G.W.A Green Presidents Trophy, and 10 Secretaries for the G.W.A Green Salver. Neil Robertson (pictured with Life Member Geoff d'Auvergne), President of the Canterbury Eagles Society, won the President Trophy with 37 points shooting a fine 76 in the process. Bruce Yates (Amberley President) was runner-up on 36 points.

In November, Waimairi Beach Golf Club played host to the 2016 New Zealand Amputee Golf Open. Although playing numbers were slightly down on previous years, the tournament was a big success with a field of 24 players enjoying the two days of golf in hot, sunny conditions in the Garden City. There was some solid scoring with Wayne Eder winning the gross in dominant fashion on his home track with scores of 80 and 79 for gross total of 159.
