The Canterbury Golf 9 Hole Christmas Tournament was held at Russley Golf Club on Monday 11 December attracting 53 players. It was great to see a good response from players considering low entries in 2016 resulted in cancellation of the 9 hole tournament. Another hot day and some not so easy rough, tested the players at Russley.

Over the last couple of years it has become increasingly difficult to gain local coverage of golf in The Press newspaper.
This is despite Canterbury Golf staff going out of their way to communicate with sports reporting staff, and providing full information and images for events and tournaments.
Most recently we were particularly disappointed with coverage of our Toro Interprovincial teams despite our efforts to gain in-depth coverage for both our men's and women's teams.
We have been told that Fairfax Media (owners of The Press) have restructured their staff several times and changed their policy about coverage of local sport.

New Zealand Golf have named a squads to compete at the Australian Master of the Amateurs (AMOTA) to be played in early January.
A squad of six New Zealanders will tee it up from January 9 to play the 2018 AMOTA. The players travelling to the East course at the famed Royal Melbourne Golf Club are Daniel Hillier, Luke Brown, Mark Hutson, Kerry Mountcastle, Matt Mclean and Tom Parker.
For the first time in history, the AMOTA will introduce a women's event with Juliana Hung receiving an invite into the field. Hung will be looking to take her Toro Interprovincial form...

Weedons will return to Woodward Cup in 2018 after winning the Woodward Cup Promotion / Relegation match against Clearwater at Coringa yesterday in fine, hot weather and the course in good order considering the current dry conditions. It was an excellent team result for Weedons who were 13 points ahead of Clearwater after 9 holes with all players contributing well to give them a final total gross stableford score of 221 and a very commanding 23 point advantage over Clearwater by the end of the match.

The Fenix Canterbury Men's Team have narrowly missed out on a semi final position at the NZ Men's Toro Interprovincials by half a point.
The opening round for Canterbury saw the team drawn to play North Harbour which was always going to be a challenge, the Canterbury team fought hard but finished with a 4-1 loss. North Harbour went on to finish top of the table in division two and went through unbeaten to win the New Zealand Interprovincial title.

The Flexi Lease Canterbury Women's Team have had a superb week competing at the highest level at the NZ Toro Interprovincials played at Sherwood Park Golf Club. The Canterbury Team quietly went about their business throughout the week accumulating five team points and winning 23 games from a possible 30 during round robin play to finish top of their division.

The 2017 President's and Secretaries Day fixture was held at the Russley Golf Club on Friday in perfect, sunny weather and the course in excellent condition. This annual event gathers Presidents and Secretaries from golf clubs across Canterbury together with club representatives, Canterbury Golf Life Members and voluneteer management associated with Canterbury Golf. 18 Presidents competed for the G.W.A Green Presidents Trophy, and 18 Secretaries for the G.W.A Green Salver.

The Canterbury Central Masters Final was played at Lincoln on Sunday in fine, breezy conditions and the course in great order between Charteris Bay and Weedons Red.
The Charteris Bay team of, from left Ric Hyden, Paul Sullivan, Rob Phillips, Richard Dwyer, John Laycock and Joe Studholme carried on their unbeaten way in 2017 to defeat Weedons Red's Wayne Hallinan, Bruce Corbett, Gary Seddon, Clarke Vincent, John O'Connor, Mike Hancock and Mike Prendergast 5.5 - 3.5.
It was a memorable day for the Charteris Bay club being the first occasion the club has won the Canterbury Central Masters Cup.

The Crystalp Jewellery Sponsored Women's Ringers Tournament was held at Rangiora Golf Club yesterday in brilliantly fine weather conditions and the course in top order.
Rangiora's Bev Craigie and Anne Reid, obviously enjoying home club advantage, won the Ringers 18 Hole Competition with 78 points from Ellesmere's Heather McKimmie and Nicola Groundwater on 77 and McLeans Island's Judy Smith and Ailex Barnett on 76 points. Scoring was very close with only 4 points between the top five pairs.
Russley's Suzanne Taylor won the 9 Hole Competition with 20 points from Akaroa's Jeanette Walker on 18 on count back from Coringa's Janet Harland.

The Canterbury Men's Masters team had a mixed week with some great team wins over strong opposition during the NZ Freyberg played at Whitford Park Golf Club.
The team started strongly with a 4-1 win over Bay of Plenty. Most of the team were either square or one down heading into the closing holes but finished strongly to record the win and gain valuable games on the board. The afternoon match against Aorangi finished with 2-3 loss with some close matches going down the final stretch.
