Miya and Hung take out South Island U19 Titles

Posted by: on 29 April 2016

Hiroki Miya (Russley) has delivered a suberb performance to win the South Island U19 Championship played at the Tinwald Golf Club this week.  Hiroki fired rounds of 66 and 67 to hold a clear advantage over the field heading into the final round today.  In the end he carded a final round of even par 72 to win the tournament by three shots from fellow Canterbury representative Tom Parker (Russley) who after shooting 73 in the opening round found his stride shooting 66 in the round 2 followed by 69 in the final round.  Third place was won by Sam Nichols (Nelson) finishing on two under par for the tournament.

In the women's section the Canterbury players achieved the trifecta with Juliana Hung (Russley) holding onto the top position overnight to win the major championship with rounds of 72, 74, 71 at two under par for the championship with Hillary O'Connor (Russley) just one shot further back at one under par.  Hillary recovered well after a slow start to tie the course record of 70 (3 under par) in the second round and then two under in the final round.  Nine year old Jeong Hyun Lee (Christchurch) showed her class not only winning the Under 13 Girls section but also by finishing third overall on +5 for the tournament.
