The Women's 36 Hole Silver and Open Interclub Finals were played at Christchurch Golf Club yesterday in changeable weather, with the course in immaculate condition.
In the 36 Hole Silver Final the Clearwater team of, from left Mee Huong Yang, Lynda Vieceli, Nina Acland, Rachel Eder, Virginia Faass and Liz Signal defeated the previously unbeaten Russley team of Lesley Martin, Sue Brown, Elizabeth Lee and Ji Young Lee in an epic battle which went to a second sudden death play-off hole before Clearwater won.
It was a thrilling end in the gathering dusk. Both teams had one win each in the morning foursomes, then it was all tied up at the end of the singles three games each. Each team nominated a player to go into the sudden death play-off with Virginia Faass from Clearwater playing Elizabeth Lee from Russley. The par four 18th hole was the play-off hole and both players three putted for five on the first extra hole. Playing the 18th again, it took a birdie 3 from Virginia to take the title for Clearwater.
The 36 Hole Open Final saw the unbeaten Tai Tapu team of, from left Jenny Stephens, Janet Nicholls, Julie Livesey, Donna Edmonds and Sharon Screen defeat a very valiant Weedons team of Sarah Lurajud, Val Fountaine, Christine McDermott and Pam Hughes 4.5-1.5 in a match up that was much closer than the numbers indicate, many of these games were closely contested before Tai Tapu could claim the team win and Champion tag.
