Bottle Lake Push for Semi Final Spot in Woodward Cup

Posted by: on 4 September 2017

Bottle Lake were the only team to come away from the first double round robin match with two wins at Woodward Cup played at Clearwater.  The mornings match against Christchurch saw Cameron Grant, Nathan Arnott, Aaron Neil and Steve Dellow win for Bottle Lake with Kris O'Neill getting the all important half against Charles Whitwham to get the team across the line.  Overall the matches between the two teams were very close with six matches going to at least the 17th hole.  Bottle Lake won their afternoon match 6-2 against Avondale.  Grant, Arnott and Neill continued their winning ways in the match against Avondale to achieve two wins for the day with Jason Campbell, Jordan Pruden and Alan Goodman contributing to the afternoon win over Avondale.

Harewood continued to hold onto their top position on the table with a 6.5-1.5 win over Templeton in the morning.  Matt McLean, Scott Manyweathers, Robert Gregory, Josh Smith and Troy Clark all won their matches with Anuresh Chandra winning by default and Blair Dibley halving his match with Rhys Wilson.

Although Russley had a number of players missing from the regular line up, due to the NZ Secondary Schools Final, they were still able to produce a quality performance with a 5.5-2.5 win over Clearwater.  Reid Hilton filled the number one shoes well with a win over Oscar Cadenhead 2/1 supported by his teammates Cam Beel, Andrew Richardson, Joe Falkner and Garth Treacy who also won their matches and Hamish Kerr who halved his match against Cleawater's Austin Hamilton.  Jake Hallinan and Ryan Adams were the only wins recorded for Clearwater.

Aaron Forsyth produced a comprehensive 5/4 win over Pegasus's Kazuma Kobori along with Richard Belcher, Chris Bond, Daniel Hobbs, Geoff Rudduck and Shane O'Brien who all won for Waitikiri for a 6-2 win over Pegasus.

With five matches going to the 18th hole in the match between Avondale and Coringa it was anyone's to win.  Jeremy Goodman, Owen Todd and Aaron Pablecheque got the wins for Avondale along with halves from Craig Prebble and Aaron Reid.  Coringa squared the match with Peter Fox, John Rademakers and Steve Yang all recording wins and James Howard and S Y Park with halved matches.

Clearwater had a tight tussle with Waitikiri coming out on top 5-3 games.  Oscar Cadenhead led the team well with a 6/5 win over Shane O'Brien.  The remaining top order for Clearwater also won their matches with Hallinan beating Forsyth 1 up, Matt Adam beating Belcher 2 up and Hamilton beating Bond 2/1 along with Noel Chambers beating Paul McEwan 3/2.

Templeton bounced back from their morning's loss to overcome Pegasus 5-3.  Sam Purdon, who has had a strong showing in the number one position for Templeton, beat Kazuma Kobori 2/1 with Tom Wilson, James Robb and Paul Brightwell winning their matches for Templeton along with two halved matches from Dan Laughton and Mike Berry.

With semi final positions looking tight Christchurch will be happy to have the team win over Harewood 6-2.  Mike Toeke, Richard Reed, Jason Sincock, John Wilson, Whitwham and John Sanders won their matches over their Harewood counterparts.

With a number of matches going near the full distance, it was Coringa that came out on top over Russley taking valuable points.  Nic Kay, John Rademakers, Steven Yang and Grant Mercer all won in the closing holes with James Howard getting the vital half against Cam Beel to secure the win for Coringa.  Hilton, Hamish Kerr and Treacy had wins for Russley but it wasn't enough to secure any team points.
