Nelson has provided a difficult day in the wind for the Nomads New Zealand Secondary Schools Championship on Monday 29 August where Burnside High School have come out on top by just four shots after 36 holes of intense golf.
Julianna Hung lead the charge for Burnside with rounds of 70 and 76 as she battled her way through the conditions with professionalism to guide Burnside team to victory which include Amelia Garvey, Hayato Miya and Hiroki Miya.
With frost delaying the start of play, the field was always on the back foot as a shotgun start was conducted to ensure they got through the full days play. From there winds would average 30kmph and even got up to 60kmph throughout the day to make the Nelson Golf Club even more challenging.
Hamilton were a close second lead by the impressive Tyler Wood who carded rounds of 72 and 76 to finish second overall in the individual standings to Hung.
Just one stroke behind Hamilton were the locals, Nelson College who after a slow start recovered extremely well in the afternoon to give all their fans something to cheer about.
This format obviously has a very unique difference which allows both genders to compete and Burnside High School of Christchurch were always one of the favourites leading into the event with the likes of Garvey and Hung in the side who are both ranked in the NZ Golf Order Of Merit top 10. With three of the best four scores counting they deserved a great victory.
Congratulations Burnside on a well-deserved victory.
