The annual Canterbury versus Aorangi representative fixture was played at the Ashburton Golf Club in cold conditions involving Women, Senior Men, Men's Masters and Junior Men.
In the Women's match Canterbury were dominant winning 17 games to 3, it was a good opportunity for the selectors to see the Canterbury team in action following the Pollock Cup round robin. Team Manager Kate Johnstone said "there were some tight matches, Aorangi always provide a good challenge, the team played well and will look to build on this performance as the representative season continues".
The Senior Men had to dig deep at lunch time trailing the Aorangi team 3.5 to 4.5 games. A solid performance from the Canterbury team in the afternoon saw them win six of the eight matches to win 9.5-6.5 overall. Daniel Laughton, Richard Reed and Hayden Burns were unbeaten for the day.
Aorangi as expected provided a big challenge in the Masters section, the mornings reverse singles matches saw the two teams finish three all after two wins each and two halved matches. Aorangi were dominant in the afternoon winning four games to take the overall win 7-5. Aaron Forsyth was the only unbeaten player in the team with a win over Jason Leary in the morning and a halved matched with Jeremy Goodman in the afternoon.
In the Under 19 matches, the Canterbury players gave shots on handicap, to the Aorangi players due to the handicap differences between the teams. This provided some very close matches with Aorangi leading 3-1 in the mornings reverse singles matches and also winning in the afternoon 2.5-1.5 to take the overall win 5.5-2.5. Logan Castles was the only unbeaten player with a 1 up win in the morning over Alex Kelliher and a halved match with Daniel Kelliher in the afternoon.
Thank you to the Ashburton Golf Club for hosting this match, the course was in excellent spring condition.
