It is a fine but cloudy day here at the 2017 Golf Warehouse Canterbury Matchplay. There is a stiff easterly breeze that will get the players attention as we follow the semi final action this morning.
Matt McLean v Oscar Cadenhead - Cadenhead 4up (all scores after 9 holes), Cadenhead wins 4/3
Tom Parker v Hiroki Miya - Parker 1up aftre nine holes, all square after 12 holes, Miya 2up with 2 to play, Miya wins 2/1
Matt McLean couldn't carry his form through from yesterday to meet the challenge from Oscar Cadenhead. His slow start left him four down on the turn and he never recovered. Equally Cadenhead is in good form and he will be looking to regain the title he won two years ago, Tom Parker and Hiroki Miya had a great battle. Although Tom got an edge after nine holes he battled with his driver all morning which ultimately led to his demise. Miya was solid throughout closing with an up-and-down par on the 17th.
Juliana Hung v Olive Tapu - Hung 3up, Hung wins 4/3
Catherine Bell v Fuuka Higashi - square after nine holes, all square after 12 holes, all square after 14 holes, all square after 18 holes, Higashi wins 1up 19th hole
Juliana Hung had a classy win against Olive Tapu. Her great short game and consistent play from tee to green saw her comfortably get in front of Tapu and get the win. Tapu played par golf most of the day but this was not good enough against Hung. The Bell/Higashi match was a bit of an epic. There was only ever one hole advantage in it, and when Bell biridie the 16th hole many thought she had the edge. However a bogey on 17 mean't they went down the 18th square which was then halved in birdies. Higashi sunk an 8 footer for par on the 19th to secure the win. Fuuka Higashi will not be known to many. She is visitng from Japan and is linked to the Rangiora Golf Club through the parents of Kazuma and Momoka Kobori.
Jonathan Stieller v Jeremy Goodman - Stieller 3up, all square after 18 holes, Goodman wins 1up 19th hole
Aaron Forsyth v Blair Dibley - Dibley 1up, Dibley wins 3/2
The Stieller/Goodman match too was a bit of an epic. Stieller sunk every putt he looked at on the front nine to get a 3up lead over Goodman. He got to five up with five to play when the putter went cold. Goodman finished with four pars and a birdiie to take it to extra holes, where he duly obliged with a par to clinch the match on the 19th. The Forsyth/Dibley match was close most of the way, until Dibley ekked out a lead to win 3/2.
Cheryl Kemp v Debbie Scott - Scott 2up, all square after 18 holes, Scott wins 1up 19th hole
Kathryn Baker v Di Kay - square, Kay wins 2/1
Debbie Scott gained an early ascendency on Cheryl Kemp to lead 2up but Kemp stayed in touch and fought back to take the match to extra holes. Both ladies had their chances on the 19th but it was Scott who came through to win. Kay and Baker had a close match and were all square after nine. Kay eventually came through to win 2/1.
Men's Div 2
Ben Baker v Austin Hamilton - square, all square after 18 holes, Hamilton wins 1up 20th hole
Steven Yang v Hayden Burns - Burns 2up, Yang 1up after 14 holes, all square after 18 holes, Yang wins 1up 19th hole
Both matches went to extra holes. There was never more than one hole in the Baker/Hamilton match, and Hamilton outlasted Baker to win on the 20th. Hayden Burns was 3up after eight holes, but lost the ninth to a birdie. This began a bit fo slide and Yang gained the ascendency late in the match until Burns got it back to square after 18. However a par was good enough for Yang on the 19th to win.
