Garvey and Parker selected as Finalists for Canterbury Sports Awards

The Nexia New Zealand Canterbury Sports Awards iconic celebration of sporting achievement honours our region's outstanding athletes, coaches, officials and administrators.  This year Canterbury Golf nominated Amelia Garvey for Junior Sportswomen of the Year, Tom Parker for Junior Sportsman of the Year and the Canterbury U19 Team for the Junior Team of the Year.

Amelia Garvey has had yet another packed year of achievements year which has recognised her as one of three finalists in the Canterbury Junior Sportswomen of the Year category.

Garvey's impressive year was capped off by winning the NZ Stroke Play Championship and making the cut at the NZ Women’s Open.  Representing NZ at the Women’s Queen Sirikit Cup was also a major achievement for Amelia.

Amelia Garvey major 2017 achievements:

  • New Zealand Stroke Play Champion
  • South Island Stroke Play Champion
  • Awarded NZ Eagles Golfing Society golfer of the year
  • Made the cut at the LPGA NZ Women’s Open event and finished as the leading NZ amateur.
  • Winner of the Zonta Secondary Schools Outstanding Young Sportswomen of the Year.
  • Canterbury Women’s Golfer of the Year
  • 2nd in Asia pacific Nick Faldo final in Vietnam.
  • 11th South American Amateur in Argentina
  • 2nd at NZ Under 19's championship 
  • NZ Amateur semi finalist

Tom Parker has also been selected as one of four finalists and is a strong contender for the Canterbury Junior Sportsman of the Year category.

Tom has had a stellar year capped off with representing NZ in three age group teams, he was also an integral member of the Canterbury U19 Team that won the Boys Interprovincial title.  

Tom Parker major 2017 achievements:

  • Canterbury Men’s Team, selected at No.1 for NZ Interprovincials
  • Canterbury U19 Men’s Team (captain) winning Boys Interprovincial Championship
  • NZ U19 Team for Junior World Cup (Japan)
  • NZ U18 Team Australian Boys Amateur Championship (Australia)
  • NZ U18 Team Asia Pacific Junior Championship (Hong Kong)
  • Runner Up New Zealand Amateur
  • 3rd= Australian Junior Amateur
  • Canterbury Men’s Golfer of the Year
  • Canterbury Fenix Men’s Ambassador of the Year
  • 3rd South Island Stroke Play
  • Canterbury Vardon Winner (Lowest Stroke Average)
  • CBHS (Captain) NZ Secondary School Champions
  • Canterbury Secondary Schools Stroke Play Champion
  • NZ Secondary School Stroke Play Individual Champion

Whilst the Canterbury U19 Team was not selected as a finalists for the Junior Sports Team of the Year they are recognised as a nominee for this award.

The Canterbury U19 Team achieved at the highest level in New Zealand winning the Boys Interprovincial title in 2017 after finishing runners up in 2015.  The Boys Interprovincial involves the leading 12 distrists from throughout New Zealand.  The team included Tom Parker, Dominic Brettkelly, Ben Baker, Kazuma Kobori, Hayato Miya, Zach May, Tiaki Ogilvie and Managers Craig Vining and Percy Reihana.  Ben Baker was also named played on the tournament with his unbeaten record for the week.
