In a first for New Zealand, golf in Canterbury has become a recognised provider for the Sport NZ Green Prescriptions Programme. The programme is provided through local Sports Trusts
A Green Prescription is a health professional's written advice to a patient to be physically active, as part of the patient's health management. Patients are referred by their GP to Sport Canterbury who have a Green Prescription team that will talk through the patient's current activity level, and help them to set an activity plan and realistic goals suited to their individual needs, health and lifestyle. Sport Canterbury's Green Prescription service caters for participants in Canterbury, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and the West Coast.
Through the work of Club Capability Manager Richard Hudson and several golf clubs, a brochure has been put together to provide patients witn the opportunity to take on golf as their physical activity.
GP referrals to the Green Presciptions Programme are about 130 patients per month. We look forward to many of those taking up golf as an option in their activity plan.
