Hellier back to defend Canterbury Strokeplay Title

Posted by: on 16 January 2018

mens open champion cropped2Southland's Scott Hellier will be back to defend the Lamb & Hayward Canterbury Strokeplay title at Waitkiri Golf Club this weekend, but will face some very stiff opposition from one of the best fields assembled in recent years.

Hellier is most recently remembered for his unbelievable course record 60 in qualifying at the 2017 New Zealand Amateur at Russley Golf Club last November and will no doubt bring that form to the strokeplay. However the introduction of the House of Travel Tour that sees $3250 worth of prizes for competing in the Canterbury, Otago and Southland Strokeplays, has attracted many top golfers from the three provinces, and throughout the South Island.

Entries closed yesterday and were well over the field limit. Many good golfers will miss out with the field to be finalised by Thursday morning. Amongst the entries for the Men's Open field are 13 from Southland, Otago, Aorangi and Tasman Districts. The Women's Open field also contains eight out-of-district entries.

The final draw will be published Thursday morning. The 54 hole event begins with 36 holes on Saturday starting 8am, and 18 holes on Sunday morning.
