Current Canterbury Strokeplay Champion and Southland Rep Scott Hellier has set the New Zealand Amateur alight with a sizzling course record 60 this morning during the second qualifying round at Russley Golf Club.
12 birdies and six pars off the black tees smashed the previous course record by seven shots, and catapulted him up to the top of the leaderboard. After his first round 76 he was likely to miss one of the 32 matchplay qualifying spots, but now will go into tomorrow's matchplay as one of the favourites.
He had a chance to shoot the magicial "59" on the par 5 18th hole with an eagle, but had to settle for a birdie instead.
For any golfing enthusiast the NZ Amateur is a "must watch" over the next few days as we get into the business end of the tournament - the matchplay starting Friday morning. The sunny weather is forecast to continue, and with many of the visiting Australians set to make the 32 for the matchplay, some intriguing match-ups are likely.
