Round 3 of Woodward Cup was played at Templeton Golf Club on Sunday in warm, breezy conditions with the course in great order.
The home team Templeton upset last year’s champions Christchurch 4.5 - 3.5 with wins for Tom Wilson, Phil Bungard, Dan Laughton and James Robb while Dave Shannon halved his match with John Sanders. Jordan Bakermans, Marcel Boet and Mike Toeke had wins for Christchurch.
Pegasus registered their first Woodward Cup victory with a 5.5 - 2.5 win over Coringa. Wins for Kazuma Kobori, Peter Briant, Brandon Parker, Richard Sinclair, Phil Stephens and a half for Peter Brinsdon with Peter Fox secured the win while Nick Franzmann and Steven Yang had wins for Coringa.
Waitikiri, after a narrow loss last week defeated Avondale in a tight match 5.5 - 2.5 . Aaron Forsyth, Paul McEwan, Ji Sung Kim, Brett Turner and Geoff Rudduck had wins for Waitikiri with Shane O’Brien halving his match with Hayden Burns. Nick Brennan and Jason Merriman had wins for Avondale.
Russley continued its strong start accounting for Bottle Lake 6.5 - 1.5 with wins for Dominic Brettkelly, Hiroki Miya, Cam Beel, Jacob Roberts, Joe Falkner and Garth Treacy. Owen Burgess halved with Nathan Arnott while Jason Campbell registered Bottle Lake’s lone win.
In the final match of the round Harewood made it 2 from 2, causing a minor upset in defeating last year’s runner-up Clearwater 5.5 - 2.5. Wins to Matt McLean, Josh Smith, Sam Watkinson, Troy Clark and Antony Dale sealed the win with Blair Dibley halving his match with James Cadenhead. Matt Adam and Jim Smith had wins for Clearwater.
At this early stage Russley narrowly leads the competition on games just ahead of Harewood with Templeton in third. Next round's match up between Russley and Harewood should be an enthralling contest.
The next round is at Waimairi Beach on 20 August.
