Bakermans Notches Up Another Local Title
7 February 2012
Christchurch's Jordan Bakermans added another club open championship to his impressive list so far in 2012 when he won the Russley Open on Sunday. This year he has already won the Waitikiri Open and Weedons Open.
His even par 144 (36 holes) was good enough to beat the home club's Regan Kilpatrick by three shots, with a further three shots back to Coringa's Moon Hak Lee.

NZ Seniors Championship: Quality Field Lines Up in Christchurch
3 February 2012
Courtesy of NZ Golf:
A quality field of 136 golfers will contest the New Zealand Seniors Championship at the Waitikiri Golf Club in Christchurch next week from Thursday 9th – Saturday 11th of February.
Many in the field are locals choosing to support the event in Christchurch, following the earthquakes, and the Kiwis will be joined by a strong international contingent that includes players from Australia (12) Scotland, Ireland, USA and Malaysia.
Taranaki golfer Murray Martin is the defending champion after he won on his home course of New Plymouth last year.
It is expected that the leading Australian threat will come from Stefan Albinski who won the title in 2007.
There are a number of other former champions in the field including four-time winner Rodney Barltrop from the Royal Wellington Golf Club (1999, 2000, 2004 and 2010), David Burton from Nelson Golf Club (2008 and 2009) and Ian Jackson from the Warkworth Golf Club (2001 and 2002).
The first New Zealand Seniors Championship was staged in 1982 which was won by New Zealand Golf legend Stuart Jones of Hastings who went on to win the title three times.
New Zealand Golf Operations Manager Phil Aickin believed the Waitikiri Golf will be a fitting host for the national event.
“The club is really looking forward to hosting this event at their place,” said the former New Zealand rep.
“In the past five years they have had around 15-20 golfers travel to this tournament and deserve the opportunity to host.”
Aickin expected a good battle over three days for the right to be crowned New Zealand Seniors Champion.
“These players still love to compete and it is good to watch just how much they love the game.
“This is certainly a coveted trophy, one that is very sought after in senior’s golf.”
The Sanctuary Cove Trophy follows the New Zealand Senior Championship on February 14 - 15 at the Christchurch Golf Club.
Teams of 12 will contest the Trans-Tasman event with New Zealand looking to regain the trophy after losing to Australia in Queensland last year.
Kilpatrick Kick Off Great Start to His College Golf
31 January 2012
Keelan Kilpatrick has only had a couple of weeks to settle into his new home in California where he is on a golf scholarship at Berkley University. With a squad of 12 players it's a tough fight to make the 5 man team, but he has done just that qualifing for the Arizona Intercollegiate. Played over 54 holes competition is tight between the colleges. Kilpatrick got off to a dream start for his team posting a 66 in the first round to be tied for the individual lead. He has just completed round 2 posting two over par 73 to be tied for 7th. The team is in second place two shots back from Arizona.
Sun Woo Bea All Class
28 January 2012
Korean national player Sun Woo Bea showed her class with a course record six under 66 in the afternoon to go with her morning 74 to take a 10 shot lead into the final round tomorrow afternoon.
Sun Woo won the title two years ago and played in the NZ Open at Pegasus. She is a student in Korea but regularly comes to Christchurch for golf.
Her afternoon round was capped off with a spectacular 25 metre chip in to make par on her final hole after nearly being out-of-bounds with her second shot.
The chasing pack is lead by Aorangi's Catherine Knight who followed up her morning round of 76 with 74.
The final four teeing off tommorrow includes Jess Guenzerodt (Christchurch) and Sylvie Williams (Waimairi Beach) a couple of shots back from Knight.
The seeded draw for tomorrow is now posted under Tournament Information.
Owen Burgess Wins Canterbury Strokeplay
30 January 2012
A resurgent Owen Burgess (Russley) won the 2012 Lamb & Hayward Canterbury Strokeplay by three shots yesterday on the tough Woodlands Course at Harewood Golf Club.
By his own high standards, Burgess did not have the best 2011 even though he played well enough to make the Canterbury team which made the semi-finals at the Toro Interprovincial. He has quietly worked on his game over the holiday period and used his experiences in 2011 as motivation to do better this year.
He started the day one shot behind leaders Hamish Campbell (Greenacres) and Jordan Bakermans (Christchurch), but after both these players recorded 78's in the morning he found himself tied for the lead with Nic Kay (Coringa) going into the final round, after they both shot 74's. Tom Turner (Christchurch) shot the low round of the morning (71) and had also bought himself into contention.
However, with nine holes to go it had become a two horse race with Burgess eeking out a two shot lead over Kay. The pivotal moment came on the brutal 550 metre par 5 14th hole playing into a stiff easterly when Nic Kay put his tee shot out-of-bounds on the road. He ended the hole with a double-bogey, and although he came back immediately on the par 3 15th with a birdie, Burgess was too steady down the stretch and finished with a one under par 71 - 17 pars and one birdie.
The new layout on the Harewood "old course" was a true test of golf. NZ Selector Rod Paterson was on hand for the weekend and said the true par for the course off the black tees was more like 74. As well as being very long, the undulating greens and big swale drop-offs made it very difficult to make birdies, and get up-and-down if you missed the green. There has been much talk about the high rough on the course, but with reasonably generous fairways it took a bad shot to reach the rough. The main issue players had was having to hit driver off most tees because of the length of the course, and in windy conditions, unless the ball was well struck, this led to some errant tee shots into the rough. Many players preferred option of a three wood off the tee to get the ball in play was not an option to them. Many players were also drawn to difficult pin placements where an approach shot to the heart of the green may have been a better option.
Burgess set a new course record on Saturday afternoon with his two under par 70.
Campbell hung on for third with a final round 74 and James Cadenhead (Clearwater) came through the field with a fine 73 to finish 5th tied with Tom Turner (77).

Sun Woo Bea Wins by 11 Shots
30 January 2012
Harewood's Sun Woo Bea cruised to victory with a final round even par 72 to win the 54 hole women's title at the 2012 Lamb & Hayward Canterbury Strokeplay.
She beat Catherine Knight (Tinwald) who shot a final round 73, and Do Eun Kim (Harewood, 74). The best of the locals was Sylvie Williams (Waimairi Beach) who finished fourth and Jess Guenzerodt (Christchurch) fifth.
Sun Woo's second round course record 66 on Saturday afternoon blew the field apart and was a master-class in driving and ball striking. It took her the morning round to get to grip with the greens, and then she started making putts in the afternoon, with approach shots that were close most the time.
The 66 included seven birdies and one bogey. She hit driver like most people hit a pitching wedge and was very long off the tee, leaving her with pitching or sand wedge approach shots.
The likeable 18 year old is studying at university in Korea and is a member of their national team. She has spent several summers in New Zealand at the Pacific Golf Academy and enjoys the ease with which you can play golf in New Zealand compared to her homeland.
Her play over the weekend has certainly shown to local players what is required to take their game to the next level.
Campbell & Bakermans Tied For The Lead
28 January 2012
Nelson visitor Hamish Campbell and Canterbury Rep Jordan Bakermans (Christchurch) are tied for the lead at the 2012 Lamb & Hayward Canterbury Strokeplay after 36 holes today.
In tough scoring conditions they are two over par with a shot back to Owen Burgess (Russley) who shot a course record 70 in the afternoon to go with his morning 77, and Nic Kay (Coringa) who shot 76 in the afternoon after a fine opening round of 71.
Three players are tied for 5th two further shots back - Tom Turner, Chang Gi Lee and Jae Hak Lee.
Then a shot further back is Moon Hak Lee and Todd Gantley.
The seeded draw for tomorrow is now posted under Tournament Information.
