Russley Win Woodward Cup

11 September 2006

Image - Russley Win Woodward Cup

Russley reclaimed the Woodward Cup at Waitikiri on Sunday by beating surprise finalists Coringa 4 ½ to 3 ½.

Russley easily reached the final after comfortably disposing of morning opponents Christchurch 6 ½ to 1 ½. It was the semi final between Coringa and defending champion North Canterbury that provided plenty of drama with a play-off needed to decide the winner. Coringa won the play-off with Mike Roulston beating Matt Adam at the first extra hole.

The final between Coringa and Russley was a close affair but it was the experience of Russley that proved the difference winning the close matches under pressure. David Rattray (pictured left) formed the backbone of the Russley side finishing the competition with 8 wins and a half.

Canterbury’s top players now turn their attention to Canterbury representative trials with the Rangiora Open and Templeton Open to be played this coming weekend.

Big Guns Shape Up For Q-School

31 August 2006

The CGA Tour Qualifying School to be played at Ellesmere this Saturday is shaping up to be a shootout between some of Canterbury’s best players. The top 10 players at the completion of 36 holes will earn CGA Tour Membership (the CGA will cover the entry fees of members into CGA Tour events). The funds to cover player entry fees have been raised through independent sponsorship.

The recent announcement of a CGA Tour re-ranking system after the Canterbury 4BBB Championship now means players failing to earn membership via the Q-School still have an opportunity to do so by performing well in the first 5 CGA Tour events. The top 10 players on the CGA Tour Order of Merit at the completion of the Canterbury 4BBB Championship will retain/earn membership.

The LCGA Tour Qualifying School will be played at Christchurch tomorrow (1 September) where Canterbury's best women golfers will compete for the 5 LCGA Tour Memberships available (a minimum of 2 going to those players aged under 19).

In line with the CGA Tour, the re-ranking of LCGA Tour Memberships will take place at the completion of the Canterbury 4BBB Championship in December.

Woodward Cup Heats Up

29 August 2006

Christchurch became the first club to secure a Woodward Cup semi finals berth with a win over Coringa in Round 5. Christchurch leads the competition on a total of 9 points with Russley and North Canterbury in second and third respectively with only half a game separating the two teams. Unless a major upset transpires this coming weekend both Russley and North Canterbury should join Christchurch in the semi finals to be played at Waitikiri on Sunday 10 September.

The race for the last semi final spot is between Coringa, Templeton, and Waimairi Beach. Both Coringa and Templeton have a total of 5 points; Coringa are in fourth place due to a two game advantage over Templeton. These two teams will meet this coming Sunday with the match being a must win for both sides. Templeton will be desperate to secure 2 points against Coringa as they must face competition leaders Christchurch in Round 7; Coringa play Waimairi Beach in Round 7.

Waimairi Beach are currently in 6th place and still have a mathematical chance of making the semi finals. Waimairi will need no less than two wins and some favorable results to go their way in order to make the semi finals.

With a promotion/relegation system introduced the Woodward Cup future of Waitikiri, Windsor, and Waimairi Beach is on the line. All three teams must play well this weekend to avoid promotion/relegation.

Team Standings and Results can be found under ‘Interclub Draws & Results’ in the menu to the left.
