The Woodward and Blank Cups Promotion / Relegation matches were held at Christchurch and Amberley Golf Clubs respectively yesterday in warm weather and both courses in great condition.
Both matches were highly competitive as expected with Waimairi Beach retaining their position in Woodward Cup in 2025 by defeating challengers Avondale 5-3. Wins to Thomas Clayson, Taylor Reid, Chadol Han, Ben Williamson and Etienne Collier got Waimairi Beach over-the-line. For Avondale Louis Edwards, Teariki Tangiiti and Richard Sinclair had wins.

The 2024 Pollock Cup Finals Day took place on Sunday with a modified finals day format that saw both the semi-final round and the final played on the same day. The neutral venue of Rangiora Golf Club played hosts with the course in fine condition for the occasion.
In semi-final one, defending champions Waimairi Beach took on a strong Russley outfit who had progressed through the regular season undefeated with 4 wins and one draw. The 2024 edition of the NZ Freyberg Masters tournament was played last week in Invercargill with the countries best men’s masters players doing battle in the annual event.
Canterbury’s team featured two players on debut at this level in Glenn Coughlan (2) and Leon Yee (Reserve) alongside the experienced players of Andrew Green (1), Aaron Forsyth (3) James Howard (4) and Jason Sincock (5.)

The fourth and final round of the 2024 Junior Foursomes competition was played at Weedons Country Club on Sunday.This competition is played over 4 weeks and is considered the first step on the pathway to interclub competition golf that progresses through the ranks to Woodward and Pollock Cups. The players range in handicaps from single figures to participants playing on the maximum handicaps as their journey in golf is just starting. Canterbury star Cooper Moore has won his maiden Men’s NZ Amateur Championship title in a thrilling final in Auckland on November 3rd which went all the way to the 36th hole! This marks the second successive year a Canterbury teenager has won the event following Seb May'striumph in 2023.

With the Final round of Woodward Cup Interclub completed at Christchurch Golf Club yesterday, the Stan Rich Salver winner for the best individual performance in the competition was presented to Clearwater's Sam McGill who won 8 of his 9 round-robin matches.
The recent Canterbury Match Play Men's Champion is pictured with the Salver.
Sam's Clearwater team will compete against last year's Champions Christchurch in the Woodward Cup Semi-Finals at Avondale next Sunday, while Templeton will meet Russley in the other Semi-Final.

The Central Canterbury Masters Final was played at Tai Tapu Golf Club yesterday in perfect weather and the course in superb condition.
Tai Tapu played against Hororata Black, with the result coming down to the last hole before the Tai Tapu team of, from left Scott Ward, Jason Blair (Captain), Ricky Hetherington, Paul Howley, Damian Hanrahan, Derek Watson and Murray Chapman won 5 ½ - 3 ½ against a very gallant Horota side of Al Sime, Dan Reardon, Shane Prendergast, Barry Marshall, James Perkins and Andrew Kenworthy.

Canterbury Golf would like to acknowledge the passing of Jim Mangnall on Thursday October 24 in his 89th year.
Jim was the secretary of the Canterbury Golf Association for a number of years in the late 1990’s and early 2000s. Jim also was employed at both Waitikiri and Avondale Golf Clubs as a Manager in the later years of his working life. He was a member at Harewood Golf Club, before joining Waimakariri Gorge from around 1990 when he moved to Oxford, and finally Greendale Golf Club when he moved to live there in 2012.
