Canterbury’s sub-region representative players were in action recently, with Canterbury North taking on Marlborough at Hanmer Springs Golf Club, while Canterbury Central hosted Buller Westland across Ellesmere and Hororata Golf Clubs in a pair of their annual competitive representative fixtures.
Canterbury North Seniors Shine Despite Marlborough Overall Victory
Canterbury North and Marlborough renewed their long-standing representative fixture over 16–17 May at Hanmer Springs Golf Club, with the contest played across three formats over two days – opening with 4 Ball Best Ball matches, followed by foursomes, before concluding with individual singles on Sunday. Scores from both the Seniors and Supporters divisions contributed to the overall result.
Canterbury North’s Seniors side produced an excellent all-round performance, taking the opening 4 Ball Best Ball session 3.5–1.5 before backing that up with another 3.5–1.5 victory in the foursomes. Marlborough mounted a strong response in Sunday’s singles, winning that session 6–4, but Canterbury North’s earlier work proved enough to secure the Seniors division 11–9 overall.
The Supporters division followed a similar opening pattern, with Canterbury North edging the 4 Ball Best Ball session 3–2. Marlborough then wrestled momentum back by claiming the foursomes 4.5–0.5, before finishing strongly with a 6.5–3.5 victory in Sunday’s singles to take the Supporters division 13–7 overall.
With the Supporters result proving decisive, Marlborough secured a 22–18 overall victory, despite Canterbury North taking honours in the Seniors division in a competitive and closely fought fixture at Hanmer Springs.
