A record 150 players are set to take part in the new look Secondary Schools Golf Day which will see two events taking place simultaneously across both Coringa Golf Club and McLeans Island Golf Club respectively.
Following increased popularity in recent years amongst secondary students for this event, last year saw an excessive number of students wishing to take part, which bought about discussions about how to accommodate all students. After consultation with School Sport Canterbury, the regional body overseeing and sanctioning local school sport events here in Canterbury, a proposal was put forward by Canterbury Golf to the Canterbury Secondary School’s sport coordinators proposing a two-event format. The logic behind this was to offer two different events which offered the appropriate level of competition for the respective participants, with a Championship event offered to players with a 20.0 handicap or under, and a Cup event offered to students with a handicap between 20-40. Ultimately, the aim of this was to include a greater number overall of students who were able to take part, with this concept gaining the support and endorsement from the schools after feedback. With the concept approved, golf course venues were confirmed with geographical proximity being key to ease logistics for the participating schools.

With the two events offered, 119 entries were received for the Championship event and 31 for the cup event leading to a total of 150 entries across the events, a great success in itself. Our thanks go to both Coringa and McLeans for their support of this concept and for making their courses available to host such a special day where there are students from a total 23 different schools from across Canterbury and beyond set to participate.
