Three of Canterbury Central’s premier interclub competitions have wrapped up for another season, with the Central Shield, Brownie Cup and Patterson Cup all providing plenty of competitive golf and close contests throughout the autumn campaign.
Ellesmere Claims Central Shield Honours
The Central Shield title was secured by Ellesmere, whose consistency across the season proved the difference in a tightly contested competition.
Ellesmere finished atop the standings with an impressive seven wins from eight matches, collecting 14 competition points and 29 match points to comfortably claim the title. Behind them, the battle for the remaining placings was fiercely contested. Hororata Black and Lincoln both finished on 10 competition points, with Hororata Black edging ahead on match points. Greendale, Weedons Black and Weedons Red all remained in contention throughout much of the season, highlighting the depth of competition across the division.
Ellesmere’s ability to continually bank wins week after week ultimately separated them from the chasing pack and saw them deservedly crowned Central Shield champions.

The Grant Lethaby Trophy to recognise the best individual performance throughout the season was won by Weedon’s Jonny Stieller who claimed 6 wins from his 8 matches. View the full Central Shield season results – HERE.
Weedons Red Rise to the Top in Brownie Cup
The Brownie Cup produced another highly competitive season, with several teams challenging for top honours before Weedons Red emerged as champions.
An unbeaten campaign featuring five wins and two drawn matches saw Weedons Red finish on 12 competition points and an impressive 38 match points. Their consistency throughout the season proved crucial, particularly with both Tai Tapu and Hororata pushing hard in pursuit.
Tai Tapu finished second on 10 competition points and 37.5 match points, narrowly ahead of Hororata, who also accumulated 10 competition points. Lincoln and Weedons Black remained within striking distance for much of the season, demonstrating just how competitive the Brownie Cup field was from top to bottom.

For Weedons Red, the title was reward for a season in which they consistently delivered strong team performances whenever the pressure was on. The Barkle Cup for the best individual player was awarded to Tai Tapu’s Dave Crosbie who went through unbeaten with 6 wins and a half. View the full Brownie Cup season results – HERE.
Hororata Triumph in Patterson Cup Finals Series
The Patterson Cup provided an exciting conclusion with a final’s series following the completion of pool play.
Hororata dominated Zone One, winning all five of their matches to finish unbeaten on 10 competition points and 31.5 match points. In Zone Two, Tai Tapu topped the standings with four wins from five matches to book their place in the semi-finals. Joining them in the finals were Lincoln South, runners-up in Zone One, and Weedons Black, who finished second in Zone Two.
The semi-finals produced two closely fought contests. Hororata defeated Weedons Black by 6.5 points to 2.5, while Tai Tapu edged Lincoln South 5 points to 4 to set up a championship showdown between the two pool winners.
The final proved every bit as competitive as expected. Hosted at Kaituna, Hororata and Tai Tapu battled throughout the day before Hororata emerged victorious by the narrowest of margins, securing a 5-4 victory and the Patterson Cup title.
The result capped an outstanding season for Hororata, who completed the competition unbeaten and backed up their dominant pool-stage performances with two strong finals victories when it mattered most. View the full Patterson Cup season results – HERE.
