The 2024 edition of the Canterbury 4BBB Championships takes place this Sunday being played at the Coringa Golf Club, which by all reports have their Championship level course in great condition as they look forward to hosting some of Canterbury’s premier male and female amateurs.
The popular 4BBB format has again attracted a large amount of interest with pair entries exceeding the limited amounts for both male and females, despite the increase this year in field size moving from 96 to 108 for this year’s event.
In the men’s competition an increased total of 40 pairs will do battle with, as expected, several quality player pairings in the field with many capable of taking the top prize. The young Canterbury Rep pairing of Cooper Moore and Yuki Miya will be a respected duo boasting a combined +7.8 handicap which surely makes them one of the pre-event pairs to watch. The Clearwater pairing of Sam McGill and NZ Amateur Champion Seb May will also no doubt be rating their chances while the Reefton pairing of Nick Franzmann and Ryan Bellamy will be a chance too with their respective experience. Other notable pairings include the like of Tim Leonard and Cam Grant and also Coringa locals Drew Butcher and John Rademakers who will be looking to make the most of their home course advantage. There will also be a couple of strong brother pairings which could shake things up with the Cadenhead brothers, James and Oscar and the Winter brothers, Luke and Adam looking to put their best foot forward on the day. Overall, in the men’s division there are 9 pairings with a combined index of scratch or better and a further 15 pairings of a combined index of between 0.0-4.2 meaning there is a deep field of potential prize winners set to compete on the 6146m long course.
In the women’s field there are also several potential winning duos within the expanded 14 pairs total. Defending champions Deanna Matthews and Aroha Minhinnick will be hoping to defend their title following their 2 shot lead in 2023. Pushing them this year will be newcomer Lannie Inoue and her playing partner Sally Rossiter who come in as the top seeds on handicap index (combined +1.6) and will be hoping to combine well. Other strong pairings include TDP players Zaria Bourne and Junie Chang as well as Canterbury players Alisia Ren and Vanessa Lim who all have talent. A local hope in the women’s field is Coringa member Mel Newburn who will be combining with her long-term Canterbury teammate Olive Tapu with the pair looking to push their opposing pairings for the top prizes. In all, there are 8 women’s pairings who boast a combined index of 9.4 or under so plenty to play for in this division too.
Action commences from 10am with a three-tee start. See the full draw – HERE.
