With three wins from three matches Clearwater and Templeton lead the 2022 Woodward Cup. Avondale are also unbeaten but drew with Russley in round two.
The early rounds have shown some very lopsided results and given a good indication of potential semi-finalists. As well as Clearwater, Templeton, and Avondale; Pegasus, Russley, and Waitkiri have a clear headstart in the race for semi-final spots.
At the other end of the ladder Christchurch and Weedons are yet to register a win, and Harewood has got one point from a draw with Waitikiri. The 0-3 record for Christchurch is a particular shock, given the club's stellar history of making the final or winning the Woodward Cup in recent years. They have lost 5.5-2.5 to Clearwater, 7-1 to Templeton, and 4.5-3.5 to Avondale so far. Based on form, these appear to be harder opponents and they will be hopeful of notching up some wins in the remaining rounds, and getting out of the relegation match zone.
A few players have shown good form. Those with three wins so far and in contention for the Stan Rich Salver are Hayden Burns (Avondale), Archie Gothard (Clearwater), Cooper Moore (Clearwater), Dominic Brettkelly (Clearwater), Sam McGill (Clearwater), Zach Norton (Pegasus), Taylor Hosking (Russley), David Zohrab (Templeton), and Jordon Latter (Templeton).
The top-of-the-table clash between Clearwater and Templeton will occur on 25 September in round seven at Weedons. Avondale play Clearwater and Templeton in the last two rounds.
Notable milestones in the first few rounds include Michael McAuley (Russley) achieving 100 Woodward Cup appearances in round two, and Jordon Latter notching up 50 wins in Woodward Cup in round three.
There is a break this weekend for the Town v Country annual fixture, then round four is at Russley Golf Club on 4 September.
