Posted by: on 4 March 2020

Emega Logo2The 2020 E-Mega Store Canterbury Match Play Championships will take place this weekend at the famed Shirley LInks (Christchurch Golf Club) under a revised format and date change. Moved from Labour Weekend to avoid a clash with other tournaments, the championship also has new qualifying criteria where players were eligible to qualify for the championship brackets according to their placing at the recent Canterbury Strokeplay at Harewood.

The Men's Championship bracket of 16 players will tee-off Satuirday morning with Canterbury Strokeplay Champion Dominic Brettkelly the top seed. He will face Waitikiri's Kris O'Neill. Second seed Hayato Miya (Russley) will face club-mate Taylor Hosking, and third seed Mike Toeke will face Templeton's Mac McCall.

The Women's Championship will tee off Saturday afternoon with seven players. Top seed Maddie May will get a bye through to Sunday morning's semi-finals where she will face either Jasmine Clancy or Estelle Lin. Canterbury Rep Catherine Bell is playing having missed the Strokeplay and will face Yoyo Fu in the first round.

The Men's Masters Championship has 13 players teeing off Saturday morning with top seeds Andrew Dufton, Brett Turner and Gary Gillard getting a bye through to the second round. It is unfortunate their were not enough entries to have a Women's Masters Championship.

There is 18 hole qualifying on Saturday morning for three categories - Men's U19's, Men's Div 2, and a new division for Men's Seniors (over 55). All players will qualify to play in the afternoon's match play.  The Men's Seniors has proved a popular introduction with local legends Robbie Bell, Ian Donaldson, Marty Holman, and Tala Natapu amongst those to line up.

Tournament sponsor Greg Shepherd from E-Mega Store is proud to be associated with the tournament and has put up two E-Golf Scooters valued at $2000 each to be given away as a lucky draw for all entriies. "We have just introduced a range of e-golf scooters that include a trike and chopper at a price point that is proving very popular" says Shepherd. "Not only do they look cool but they are very reliable and easy to ride" continues Shepherd.
