Miya and Hung Win at Canterbury Matchplay

Posted by: on 9 October 2016

Canty Matchplay Winners LRHiroki Miya and Juliana Hung won the men's and women's championships at the 2016 Golf Warehouse Canterbury Matchplay completed at Coringa Golf Club this afternnoon. 16 year old Miya won the title for the first time, while Hung followed up her win in 2014.

Miya had a good tussle with Tom Wilson and went through the turn 1up. Apart from missing a couple of putts, Miya played the steadier golf throughout. They were all square after 13 holes, but Miya won the 15th, and sunk a crucial  six foot par-saver on the 16th for a half. When Wilson pulled his drive into the rough on 16 and lost his ball, Miya went to the 17th hole 2up. He hit a superb iron to six feet on the 193 metre par 3 17th and completed his 3/1 win with a conceded birdie.  Miya has been a golfing talent from an early age, and his break through into the open ranks bodes well for the future. Wilson also had a good tournament, following up some very good form through Woodward Cup.

The women's championship was close for the first nine holes with Juliana Hung taking a 1up lead through the turn. From there she won consecutive holes and by the 14th had a 4up lead.  Hillary O'Connor had a cold day with the putter, while Hung's short game was superb. The 14th hole showcased this when on the par 5 O'Connor had a six footer for eagle. Hung hit an 80 metre pitch shot to two feet for a birdie, and ended up halving the hole when O'Connor missed her eagle opportunity.  The match was over on the 15th 4/3.

In the men's masters, Blair Dibley had a battle on his hands throughout against Paul Bailey. By hole 8 he had ecked out a 1up lead and crucially won hole 9 to go through the turn 2up. However Bailey would not go away and it took until the 17th hole for Dibley to finally get the ascendency and win 2/1. The Canterbury Rep Selectors have a conundrum on their hands to select the Freyberg Masters team to be named this week. The incumbents didn't really flatter through the tournament except for Dibley who will surely be named in the team.

The women's masters was won by Cherl Kemp after a ding-dong batlle that was only won on the 18th hole. There was never more that one hole in it and they went down 18 all square with Kemp prevailing after Chris Marple had bunker trouble.

In the Div 2's, Catherine Bell (women's), Richard Reed (men's), and John Rademakers (men's masters) were the winners.

A huge thank you must go to the Coringa Golf Club. The course played superbly and the layout continues to be a stern test for our top golfers. The greens were particularly quick but also consistent. Thanks must also go to Murray Brown and his team at the Golf Warehouse for continuing to support the tournament.
