Three amateurs have prevailed from 53 golfers (that included Canterbury players Matt McLean, Mike Toeke and Ryan Bellamy) at the final qualifying tournament for this week’s 101st New Zealand Open, presented by Sky Sport.
Jimmy Zheng and Adam Church both fired six-under par 66’s while McLean was the final player to finish, shooting a four-under 68 to snatch the third and final spot up for grabs at the Cromwell Golf Club.
Kazuma Kobori will also relish the opportunity to play the NZ Open after receiving an NZ Golf invitation.
“I really wanted to qualify for the open this year, it was a major goal for me.” says McLean. “I’ve got my game plan worked out. It’s all about backing yourself, you need to make birdies and be agressive but also make smart decisions”. I’m just really looking forward to enjoying the tournament”.
Matt tees off at Millbrook for round one tomorrow morning at 8.47am, while Kazuma starts his tournament at the Hills starting at 8.03am.
