The newly launched Canterbury Golf Talent Development Plan is in full swing with monthly sessions having been delivered in January, February, and March.
The programme's intentions are to bring together our best emerging young players and to provide holistic talent development support to help them realise their potential as golfers and as people.
In keeping with this holistic support theme, so far the participants have been introduced to content focussed on Athlete Life and Skill Development. In session 1 the participants learned about the concept of long-term athlete development and where they sit within this followed by an introduction of player welfare principles. In the subsequent sessions in February and March, the trainings focussed on technical/tactical themes or skill development delivered via a mix of practice and theoretical reflection and discussion.
Led by local coaches Rodney Yee and Matt Holten, the purpose of the technical/tactical sessions is to help players begin to understand the skill requirements of each game component: tee shots, approach shots, short game and putting. The focus is to deliver skills tasks that will allow players to ask questions of their skill set. From a tactical perspective, players will be introduced to the importance of the tactical side of the game. In training, they will start to understand the importance of their shot dispersion how they can use this information to better their scoring and performance. Some of the content delivered to date has been on short game testing and pre-shot routine design, reflections, and practice.
The players are also given homework-type tasks related to the content to work on in between each session. Often these are things they can practice implementing as part of their games and trainings as their season progresses and are asked to report back on their progress at the start of the next session.
In the upcoming schedule, the players will start to gain an understanding of PHV, be receiving support around Mental Skills as well as looking at their individual tournament plans for the remainder of 2022.
