With a forecast for rain and possible snow, it was an almost pleasant surprise to have a fine but cold day at Waimairi for the first round of Pollock Cup on Sunday and the Waimairi Beach course was in excellent condition after the heavy rain in the preceding days.
A talented line-up and last year's winners Russley made their mark on the competition with a 6-0 win over Waitikiri who were without two of their lower handicap players. At the top of the order, Maddie May and Naomi Wallace battled it out to the 17th hole where Maddie halved the hole to take the 2 & 1 win. Fiona Wallace and Chris Marple had equallyclose matches to both lose at the 18th.
Christchurch and Harewood again produced the 'Battle of the Catherines', Knight and Bell, with Bell taking a narrow 1 up win at the 18th. Olive Tapu, back after recovery from remedial surgery in the past months, defeated Anne Dick in another close 1 up win. Wins by Marina Neylon and Nicola Webb gave the Christchurch team the 4-2 victory.
Strong performances by Weedons' Deanna Matthews and Virginia Faass to win, could not unfortunately be matched by other team members with a final win to Pegasus 4 games to 2.
