Pollock Cup Round 5 was played at Clearwater yesterday in cool, windy conditions and light rain towards the end of play just adding to the challenge.
In the first match of the day Harewood played current champions Christchurch who prevailed 4-2, but not before some very tight matches decided the outcome, with three matches going down the 18th.
For Christchurch, Catherine Bell, June Edwards and Nicola Webb, who achieved her first hole in one on the par 3, 4th hole had wins, while Oilve Tapu halved with Sally Rossiter and Jennifer Cho halved with Debbie Scott. Harewood's sole win came from Lynda Brown.
Waimairi Beach and Waitikiri also had some contrasting matches, some close and others very convincing before Waitikiri came out on top 4-2. Kim Moggach won a close match at the top of the order, together with Naomi Wallace and a big win for Jenny Ahn. For Waimairi Georgia Wayman won a close match while Pam Chapman had a convincing 7/6 result.
The upset of the round saw Avondale defeating a young Russley team 4-2. With three matches going to the penultimate hole and another to the 18th the result could have gone either way, but it was wins to Nicole Hamilton-Cross, Sharon Worrall, Rhonda Hira and Kasey Cross winning close matches that was the difference. Estelle Lin and Jasmine Clancy had wins at the top of the order for Russley.
Clearwater had the bye this week.
With the Canterbury Aorangi Representative fixture next Sunday in Ashburton, the next round of Pollock Cup will be at Harewood on 25 September.
