Round 6 of Pollock Cup was played at Harewood on Sunday in fine conditions and the course in great order.
Being the penultimate round of the competition, teams were keen to put some good results on the board to enhance their play-off hopes.
Waimairi Beach were one of the teams who made the most of their opportunity upsetting leaders Clearwater 3.5-2.5. For Waimairi Beach, Zaria Bourne and Pam Chapman both won tight matches, Angela Gerken had a big win and Georgia Wayman halved with Marg-Mary Coughlan. Rachel Eder at No.1 and Lexi-Thomson-Hall both had wins for Clearwater.
Waitikiri continued their good form and put their hand up as genuine top four contenders defeating Russley 5-1. Ginny Bolderston and Chris Marple both won their matches on the 18th while Naomi Wallace, Nicky Muir and Kim Moggach all had comfortable wins. Russley's lone win came from teenager Alice Fry.
Christchurch flexed their muscles against Avondale with a dominant 5.5-.5 win. A final hole win to Jennifer Cho, comfortable wins to Olive Tapu, Catherine Bell, Nicky Webb, Ina Lee-Hall and a half to Mel Newburn against Kawhena Rangihaeata promoted Christchurch to the top-of-the-table on games won leading into the final round.
With a round to go three teams, Christchurch, Waitikiri and Waimairi Beach, who have the bye in the final round, all sit on 7 points. Clearwater are a point back on 6 points and Russley two points a drift of Clearwater on 4 points. Key match ups in the final round at Waimairi Beach on 9 October see Russley vs Clearwater and Christchurch against Waitikiri, so individual games won will be critical to determine Semi-Final spots.
In the Individual honours stakes for the Merle Barley Salver results are just as close. Kim Moggach and Angela Gerken are both unbeaten with a perfect 5 wins from 5 and Catherine Bell and Georgia Wayman are both on 4.5 from 5. With Waimairi Beach having the bye next round Angela Gerken will watch with interest in the hope that results go her way.
