Semi Finalists found for 2019 Woodward & Pollock Cups

Posted by: on 14 October 2019

In fine Spring conditions at Pegasus Golf Club yesterday the Woodward Cup semi-finalists were found for Finals Day on 10 November at Templeton. Two rounds were played on a course in superb condition after the recent Charles Tour Pegasus Open.

Top qualifier Christchurch will play fourth placed Waitikiri in one semi, while second placed Russley will play third placed Harewood in the other.

Round 8

Hosts Pegasus had a chance to make the semis but did not get off to the start they wanted when they lost to Waitikiri 4.5-3.5 in the morning. For Waitikiri Jordan Pruden, Aaron Forsyth, Chris Bond, and Woo Bong Kim had wins, while Geoff Rudduck halved with Mike Taylor. For Pegasus Andrew Green, Zach May and Rodney Van Steenis won.

Needing to win both rounds, Templeton also had a shot at the semis and got off to a good start beating Bottle Lake 5-3. Tom Wilson, Ryan Bellamy, James Robb, and Josh Simpson all had wins, while Sam Purdon halved with Kris O'Neill, and Todd Gantley halved with Kieran Sharvin. For Bottle Lake Lachie Mackay and Jason Campbell were victors.

Harewood were well in semi-final contention and beat Weedons 5-3 in the morning with wins to Josh Smith, Scott Manyweathers, Gavin O'Hara, and Daniel Lundt with a half to Ryan Barham against Austin Hamilton, and Sam Watkinson against Brad Nightingale. For Weedons James Metzger and Alex Van Schaardenburg won.

Christchurch and Russley had virtually cemented semi-final spots and this was confirmed when they both had wins in the morning. Christchurch beat Coringa 6-2, and Russley beat Hororata 6-2.

Round 9

Templeton needed to win to have a chance of a semi-final but found Russley to tough going down 4.5-3.5. There were four close matches - one was a half between Andrew Dufton and Josh Simpson, while Hayato Miya beat Tom Wilson 2/1, Michael McAuley beat Ryan Bellamy 2up, and Owen Burgess beat James Robb 2/1. Regan Kilpatrick got the other win for Russley. For Templeton Sam Purdon had a good win over Reid Hilton at the top-of-the-order, and Jordon Latter beat Taylor Hosking.

The loss by Templeton confirmed Waitikiri for the semis. Their 5-3 loss to Bottle Lake mean't they had qualified by one point from three teams - Pegasus, Templeton, and Bottle Lake, with Pegasus the fifth place-getter on a games countback, courtesy of their 6.5-1.5 win over Coringa.

Christchurch beat Harewood 5-3 to confirm the top qualifier spot, and the battle between Weedons and Hororata ended in a 4-4 draw meaning both teams avoided the promotion/relegation match, which unfortunately Coringa will have to contest.

Joint Winners of the Stan Rich Salver for most individual wins were Andrew Dufton (Russley) and Nic Kay (Christchurch) who were both unbeaten with 8 wins and a half from 9 matches.

The Pollock Cup Semi-Finalists were found yeterday at Harewood Golf Club, where the final round robin games were played in warm, sunny conditions with the Woodlands course in great order.

The top-of- the-table clash between Russley and Christchurch provided some great match ups and close matches with three matches going to the penultimate hole before Russley came out on top 4-2 with wins to Maddie May, Hillary O'Connor, Jasmine Clancy and Alisia Ren. Christchurch's wins came from Nicola Webb and Mel Brew.

Pegasus cemented their place in the semi finals with a good win over Waimairi Beach 4.5-1.5 with wins to Rion Ishizawa, Amy Weng, Yoyo Fu, Sharon Stewart and Bobbi Oliver halving with Fetoni Humm. Jana Beneke defeated Karen De Lautour for Waimiari Beach's only win.

Weedons registered their second win of the competition upsetting Waitikiri 4.5-1.5 in some desperately close finishes, with three matches going to the 18th. Wins to Jenny Clarke, Adrienne Shadbolt, Di Kay, Nola Marriott and a half to Viriginia Faass against Ginny Bolderston got Weedons over the line with Waitikiri's lone win coming at the top of the order from Kim Moggach.

The Pollock Cup Merle Barley Salver for most individual wins was won jointly by, from left Hillary O'Connor (Russley), Maddie May (Russley), Nicola Webb (Christchurch) and Jasmine Clancy (Russley, absent) who were all unbeaten with 6 wins from 6 matches.
