Semi-finalists found for Woodward Cup

Posted by: on 18 October 2021

Rounds 1 & 3 were played at Avondale Golf Club yesterday to complete round-robin for the 2021 Woodward Cup and find the semi-finalists to compete on Finals Day Sunday 21 November at Christchurch Golf Club.

Round 1

Harewood kept their slim semi-final hopes alive with a comprehensive 7-1 win over bottom-placed Weedons. Matt McLean, Scott Manyweathers, Harry Weeds, Gavin O'Hara, Dan Lundt, Sam Watkinson, and Kerry Branson won for Harewood, while Keith Mills got the sole win for Weedons.

Semi-final contenders Templeton and Clearwater squared off and Templeton came through 6-2. Clearwater had a couple of good results at the top with Archie Gothard and Will Bastings halving with Mike Toeke and Dan Laughton respectively. However Templeton were too strong through the rest of the order with wins to Ryan Bellamy, Josh Simpson, Sam McGill, Greg Hey and Tom Wilson. Ryan Adams got the only win for Clearwater.

Pegasus continued on their winning way with a 7-1 victory over Bottle Lake. At the top Canterbury reps Kazuma Kobori and Andrew Green had a great match with Kazuma prevailing on the 18th 1up. However the other wins were comprehensive with Zach May, Shaun Allan, Phil Stephens, Marcus Mariu, Peter Brinsdon and Chris Posa prevailing. Aaron Neill continued his good form with the sole win for Bottle Lake.

Waitikiri caused a minor upset with a 5-3 win over Christchurch. For Waitikiri Aaron Forsyth, Blair Franklin, Simon Marshall, Chris Bond and Ian Donaldson won. While Christchurch got their wins from Nic Kay, Mika MacDonald, and Jason Sincock.

Russley beat Avondale 6-2 with several lop-sided wins and a couple of halves. Taeriki Tangiti was the sole victor for Avondale.

Round 3

In the afternoon Harewood went all out and came up with a 4.5-3.5 victory over front-runners Pegasus. This should have been enough to get them in the semis, but they would miss out on a games count-back to Clearwater for the fourth spot. In the match notable wins went to Matt McLean 2/1 over Kazuma Kobori, and Scott Manyweathers 3/2 over Peter Brinsdon. Four games went to the last hole and two others to the 17th.

Clearwater lost to Waitikiri 5-3, but it was enough to snag the fourth semi-final spot by four games. Waitikiri got four wins at the top-of-the-order and added two halves at the bottom.

Avondale and Bottle Lake had a good battle with the home club prevailing 5.5-2.5. Wins to Dean Harvey, Sam Purdon, Nick Brennan, Nathan Andrews, Haupai Puha and a half to Teariki Tangiiti sealed the victory. Aaron Neill again came up trumps for Bottle Lake along with Daniel Asplin and the half to Lachie MacKay.

Templeton finished top-of-the-table courtesy of an 8-0 drubbing over Weedons, and Russley cemented third place with a 6-2 win over Christchurch.

In the semis Templeton will play Clearwater, and Pegasus will play Russley.

Templeton's Ryan Bellamy won the Stan Rich Salver with 8 wins and a half over the nine rounds.
