The 2019 Woodward Cup teed off at Waitikiri Golf Club yesterday in fine but damp conditions. There were some interesting results as teams brushed off the cobwebs for what is set to be a close-run competition.
There were two draws. Russley drew with Bottle Lake 4-4. For Bottle Lake No.1 Cameron Grant won along with Kris O'Neill, Lachie MacKay, and Steve Dellow. For Russley it was the "older" players that came through with wins to Regan Kilpatrick, Michael McAuley, Owen Burgess, and Andrew Dufton. Weedons also drew with Templeton with Jonathan Stieller beating Sam Purdon 2 up at the top of the order, along with wins to his Weedons team-mates Austin Hamilton, Alex Van Schaardenburg, and Ben Burgess. For Templeton it was up to Todd Gantley, Jordan Latter, Rhys Wilson, and Greg Hey to get the necessary wins for the draw.
Harewood had a good win over Pegasus 5.5-2.5. The batlle of the Canterbury team-mates at the top ended in a half between Matt McLean and Andrew Green. But wins to Rhian Hamilton, Josh Smith, Scott Manyweathers, Sam Watkinson, and Daniel Lundt sealed the victory. For Pegasus the wins came at the bottom of the order to Peter Lund and Mike Taylor.
Christchurch also beat newcomers Hororata 5.5-2.5. Christchurch were strong at the top with comprehensive victories to Jordan Bakermans, Mike Toeke, Nic Kay, Richard Reed, and Nick Franzman at No. 6. James Simpson halved with Andrew Inch, with Hororata's wins going to Owen Miller in a close match with Jason Sincock, and Steve Bell.
Hosts Waitikiri beat Coringa 5-3, with wins to Jordan Pruden, Aaron Forsyth, Antony Dale, Woo Bong Kim, and Simon Marshall. For Coringa Steven Yang, John Rademakers, and Mike Toal prevailed.
Round 2 is at Russley this Sunday with the feature clash being Christchurch versus Templeton.
